Come along to Shrule community centre on September 11th at 8:00 pm for an interesting presentation by Dr. Jessica Cooke regarding Shrule’s ancient abbey and it’s importance more than 1000 years ago . . .
The placename “Áth an Tearmainn, the Ford of the Monastic Sanctuary”, is cited in the medieval Irish annals only twice; once as the location where Turlough Mor O Connor was made king in 1106 and once as the boundary between the dioceses of Cong and Tuam in the year 1111., and once as the location where Turlough Mór O’Connor was made king in 1114. It seems likely that these two records refer to the same place, but the whereabouts of Áth an Tearmainn are unknown. This talk argues that Shrule, on the Mayo-Galway border, was once Áth an Tearmainn, where “Cloghvanaha” or the “Blessed Stone” beside the early church site near the Black River, was the inauguration mound where Turlough was made king.
We hope you can let your members know about this most interesting talk and that those of you who attend will join us for light refreshments afterwards.
Location of the site is roughly half way between the graveyard and the river
